Electric or Standard: Which Board is right for you?

Whether you’re a newcomer to the world of skateboarding or an established old head, one debate you’ve most likely heard of is electric skateboards versus standard ones. A basic electric skateboard consists of an electric motor, batteries, speed controller, and a wireless throttle on top of a regular skateboard. A basic skateboard usually consists of a specially designed Maplewood board combined with a polyurethane coating used for making smoother slides and stronger durability. Of course, skateboarding enthusiasts fall on both sides of the debate. There are definitely important pros and cons to consider before making a purchase one way or the other.

Price is one of the biggest cons of E-Skateboards. Some premium models cost more than $1,000. In comparison, even the most extravagant standard model will cost several hundred dollars cheaper. For some enthusiasts, the biggest pull for skateboarding is the affordability. As the saying goes, money can’t buy you happiness. However, it can buy you a decent skateboard for less than a grand.

On the flip side, a con for standard boards is the braking system. Electric skateboards are significantly safer. With just the push of a button on the remote control, you can bring your board to a complete stop. That is ten times safer than using your feet or bodyweight to brake. Trying braking on a standard skateboard and you might twist an ankle.

Technology is at the forefront of electric skateboards, which gives them a huge advantage. The motor within the board accelerates faster than any legs could ever do so. Gone are the days when you have to push yourself uphill. Electric skateboards give you the speed that many have only dreamed of in the past. Now your travel time will be drastically cut in half. Wave goodbye to your standard board friends as you zoom past them at 20mph for miles and miles down the street.

Yet, there’s something to be said about not having to constantly hold a remote control to move or stop or charge your electric skateboard. Granted, a standard model doesn’t offer the bells and whistles that come from advanced technology. However, what it lacks in sophistication it provides an easy to use experience. Who has time to worry about charging an electric skateboard? When you want to hit the road, you want to do so without any impediments. Charging can become a hindrance if you don’t stay on top of it or have two or more hours to dedicate the task. Have you ever forgotten to charge your cell phone in a hurry? Imagine the same experience with your electric skateboard.

Overall, skateboarding is known for having a positive impact on a person’s life. Obviously picking the right board is paramount to ensuring the best experience. Perhaps an electric skateboard will be the best investment for you. Or maybe a standard board fits your needs just perfectly. At the end of the day, make sure your choice allows the best amount of freedom to ride without bailing.
