My main gripes are that it tries to have a FarCry-sized environment but fails utterly. The checkpoints wouldn't be such a nagging thing if the maps were on the order of FarCry's.

The second is that the main story line is completely silly and unbelievable. Had they only made it a personal thing that you want to kill this arms dealer, then it would have worked so much better I think. Then there would be a point to these sessions where he rescues you, which could make you think ok, he's saved my life a few times, should I really do it?

As it is though, there's no personal motive or established "career" motive to make it believable that your character should care enough to continue the mission.

Note, I've only completed about 60-70% of the main story line so far, so it might still change a bit.

Far Cry 2 is really kind of strange like that. If you think you dig the major parts of it then I'd say just stick with it. It rewards player effort.

Also, the world gets larger after a certain point; I mean, it stays, practically, the same size but after a certain storyline point it feels larger.

I'm a few hours in, and so far I'm having trouble seeing past the flaws. The world seems like a claustrophobic web of canyons with annoying checkpoints at every intersection. It also feels too small to be convincing. I expected something much larger, since their editor looks to automate so much of the work.

I agree with most of the positive point you posted, though. I'll give it a couple more hours and hopefully it will start to come together for me.

i bet far cry 2 sucks because it's not made by valve and thus can't be innovative. i mean does it even have a gravity gun?
or..a CROW BAR?
and what's this about a FPS actually telling you what's going on in a plot? you're supposed to figure it out yourself from subtle obscure hints from NPC's
