@Jim Croche:

It really, really isn't worth pointing out that it isn't worth pointing out that it’s worth pointing out that if you have an article entitled “The Problem with Games Journalism,” then the tagline of your site best not be “Independent game journalism.”

In fact, it's so not worth it that I question your very existence, because I cannot even begin to fathom someone so utterly and completely worthless as you yourself must be.

Good day.

That really isn't worth pointing out. You're better off starting with a counter argument than a failed dig. The fact that the article is about games journalism sucking, and the website says "independent games journalism" isn't remotely ironic. Lameass.

Great piece. I'm often baffled by what seems to be unbridled hatred for intellectual gaming discourse. This baffles me because, as a gamer, I find that kind of talk absolutely interesting and have for a very long time.

Robson's article seems based on a few false premises. 1) The most valid form of criticism is that which makes the most money (hence his focus on what the "average" gamer cares about). 2) Gamers don't want to read.

I did not subscribe to CGW for the 8+ years I did because it told me whether games were worth buying or not. I did it because I enjoyed reading it. There is a reason I did not cancel my CGW subscription during my 6-month video game hiatus, a time in which I should, ostensibly, not have cared about game reviews.

Regarding the paragraph that begins "I have a background in English and Creative Writing..."

I think that, if you really want to get into a serious discussion of games criticism, you want to begin to talk about how a game resonates with you personally.

Again, I think the recurring issue that seems to keep rearing its head is "journalism" vs. "criticism."

I don't really think its necessary that a person must exclusively write games journalism or exclusively write games criticism. In fact, I see no reason why one should limit himself exclusively to either.

But with that said, I'm certain that its best to keep factual pieces strictly factual, devoid of personal commentary.
